Former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) plans to resign before the end of the year, Republican sources said yesterday.
"It's pretty much a certainty that he is expected to step down before the end of the year," said a House GOP leadership aide. Hastert previously announced he will not seek reelection next year.

Dennis Hastert is a man who has served with some distinction as a moderator of the more extreme rhetoric of a Republican controlled Congress.
But Dennis never salted away al, that much dough and he's known to be anxious to wait out his 'Cinderella period' before becoming eligible to lobby his buddies. The other obvious concern is how many buddies will actually survive until Mr. Hastert gets in the moneyed saddle of K-Street.
Time to get on shufflin' down the road.
